Kent Kiefer and Scriptures in Use reach out to indigenous peoples by providing oral Bibles in the language of the people. Local leaders use these to help their neighbors find hope and salvation.

Jesus told stories and parables. He pulled spiritual truth from everyday life with stories and symbols from the local culture, from sheep to sowing, harvesting, and fishing, to convey his message. The stories Jesus told and the life and actions of Jesus himself were told and retold.

Today, Kent and SIU continue that tradition by reaching the unreached through storytelling.

The Rescuers radio show provides an opportunity to spotlight people who are working behind the scenes to make this world a better place. These people serve as inspiration and idea starters to encourage others to find creative ways to impact their community, their city, and the world.

Host Art Brooks has spent his career in broadcasting, both as on-air talent and in representing the industry as president and CEO of the Arizona Broadcasters Association for nearly 30 years. He was the driving force behind an Emmy-winning series of documentaries on drug abuse that combined a phone bank of 100 seasoned counselors and history-making "roadblock," as every TV station in Arizona and many radio stations broadcast the groundbreaking show on the same day at the same time. He also was instrumental in starting AZ AMBER Alert (one of two states in the nation where broadcasters initiated the program), helped form the Native American Broadcast Institute at Northern Arizona University and consulted with broadcasters in Bulgaria to help build commercial radio as the country was coming out of communism.

Rescuers airs 5:30-6 p.m. AZ time Thursdays on KPXQ-AM Faith Talk 1360, beginning May 7, 2020. Based in Phoenix, it is available internationally online. The Bible is full of stories about God working astounding miracles in people’s lives. We need to remember, however, that He is still in the business of touching lives.

Mark Ellis is a storyteller who shares those modern-day miracles.

From an astronaut’s transformative encounter with Jesus on the moon, to Vincent van Gogh’s unappreciated journey with Christ, Mark has devoted himself to sharing accounts of God revealing himself in the lives of ordinary people in divine  interventions that span, cultures, backgrounds, and circumstances.

He manages a website on his God Reports, and has gathered many of those stories together. His latest published book is When Kingdom Light Shines.

Inspiring faith through stories – Mark Ellis

Meaghan Rodeck has a gift for making things happen. She uses that gift to help restore peace to families pulling themselves out of homelessness, providing everything from emergency shelter to affordable housing.

She is the Vice President of Strategy and People Operations at UMOM New Day Centers, an organization started 60 years ago and once known as the United Methodist Outreach Ministries. Their goal is to end family homelessness in our community by restoring hope and rebuilding lives.

As the largest shelter for unhoused families in the state, UMOM does not manage homelessness – they work to end it. They cite their formula to success as: Jobs + Housing = Ending Homelessness.

The organization serves nearly 15,000 individuals annually, providing safe shelter and services for nearly 700 people each night, including families and single women. They help families find permanent affordable housing, providing critical stability for children. Studies indicate each time a child moves, they can lose as much as six months of academic progress.

In addition to housing, they offer services that target issues that may have led to homelessness, including job training, healthcare, healthy food, basic financial training, and counseling.

Ron Friesen is a spiritual director. He’s also an educator, community activist, pastor, shepherd, counselor, and author. Most of all, he’s a servant, going where God calls him.

That journey has taken him many places, from Canada to Phoenix, to founding two churches, serving the unhoused, and hospice chaplaincy.

Ron has a heart for people of all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds, and counsels clients with abuse issues, those who struggle with addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder. He is a light of hope for the mentally ill, not just in traditional health care centers, but providing therapy in the prisons.

He takes that all that lived experience and teaches as a adjunct professor at Grand Canyon University bringing up a new generation of helpers.

Ron shows us what just one person can do to change countless lives.
